After restoration, Hai Van Quan, the place with "the most majestic scenery in the world", retains its majestic beauty amidst the magnificent landscape of Hai Van Pass, making many tourists hope that the scenic spot will soon be opened to admire.

Hai Van Quan is located on the top of Hai Van Pass with thousands of clouds and winds, is the administrative boundary between Da Nang and Thua Thien Hue, and is also the natural boundary dividing the climate and culture of the two regions. The nearly 200-year-old building was damaged and was “transformed” after a 3-year restoration. The restoration cost of more than 42 billion VND was contributed equally by Thua Thien Hue and Da Nang. Thua Thien Hue, which has experience in heritage restoration, is in charge of implementation. The project will complete the main items from the beginning of 2024.

In the photo is Hai Van Quan at dusk looking from Da Nang towards Lang Co Bay in Thua Thien Hue at the end of June. The following photo is the Hai Van Quan relic while being restored in 2022.

The project was researched and restored closely to the Nguyen Dynasty’s architecture, with the main gate using bricks and surrounded by stone walls. In the middle of the gate is the words Hai Van Quan engraved in Chinese characters.

From the main gate of Hai Van Quan, look at the headquarters building. The three-room residence and treasury house were restored according to archaeological remains and documentary photos. The house is built with brick walls, wooden pillars with stone bases, and a tiled roof.

The two three-room armory buildings (on the left) and the headquarters house are places to store and preserve the royal weapons and serve as a resting and working place for the soldiers guarding this place.

According to Mr. Huynh Dinh Quoc Thien, Director of the Da Nang Museum, there are currently items such as the main gate of Hai Van Quan, the majestic First Heavenly Gate (the highest guard post), the headquarters, the armory, and artillery positions. The dais, stone walls, and walkways have been completed. The soil retaining wall, drainage ditch, Nguyen’s citadel wall system, side gates, watchtowers, and railings are also basically completed.

Last June, the two gates were almost completed but were not yet open for tourists to visit

From the residence, looking out to the main gate. The project is still “closed” because the authorities of Da Nang and Thua Thien Hue have not yet agreed on a plan to manage and exploit the monument.

Thuan Loi, tour guide, also expressed regret that Hai Van Quan relic has not yet opened to welcome tourists. He said domestic and foreign customers always proactively suggest this place in their Hue – Da Nang tour schedule. “The opening of Hai Van Quan will be an interesting destination to attract tourists,” the tour guide said.

The passage through the side door facing the first world is majestic with a domed door, tiled, surrounded by stone walls. From this position, looking south you can see Da Nang with Tien Sa port – Son Tra peninsula, white sand beaches running along the coast. Looking to the north is the picturesque Lang Co Bay with winding passes and flying white clouds.

Today, this place is an ideal place to visit and admire the scenery, worthy of the title “the most heroic hero in the world” given by King Le Thanh Tong when stopping to admire the scenery here.

Arriving at Hai Van Quan at the end of June, Trung Phan, a freelance photographer in Hue, said that the valuable relic, located in the middle of a magnificent landscape with forests, mountains, and sea, “will definitely become an attractive tourist destination.” .

A representative of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center said the two sides are urgently looking for plans to effectively exploit and preserve the relics. It is expected that by the third quarter of this year, it will be open to visitors.
